Camping Trip Update!

Hello campers! This weekend is the Turkey Run campout, and there are a couple of important items as we prepare. The key activity will be a five mile hike with full backpacks to satisfy one of the requirements for camping merit badge. We will spend some time discussing backpacking techniques and practices prior to hitting the trail.
• The troop has a number of frame backpacks (17 or so) which we will bring. This is not enough to outfit all of the campers, so both scouts and adults are encouraged to bring their own if they have one. Let me emphasize that these are internal frame packs. Please do not bring day packs (knapsacks/book bags)- please let me know if you have any questions on this.
• Your scout needs to bring appropriate footwear. Carrying extra weight in potentially wet and muddy conditions provides challenge enough without fighting one’s shoes as well! Boots with ankle support are ideal, but a high quality shoe can work. Please make sure they have laces that can be tightened.
• Extra socks are a must.
• Finally, all scouts must have a water bottle. The hike will be several hours, and the scouts need to stay hydrated.

Speaking of hydration, it appears that there is a very good chance that it will rain during the campout. Ponchos should be kept accessible for the car ride and set up. Also, please pack warm clothes for sleeping. It’s very important that the boys can change into warm, dry clothes before going to bed. This has been mentioned before, and it is a safety issue- I don’t feel like reviewing the treatment for hypothermia this weekend! Camping in the rain isn’t ideal, but it can be enjoyable if you’re prepared.

We look forward to seeing you at the shed Friday night at 5:15. Please let us know if you have questions in the meantime!
