About the troop 101 Venturing Crew
Troop 101 now has an active Venturing Crew. We hAll of the young men that are part of the crew at this time are or were members of the Scout Troop and most are Eagle Scouts. We are actively working with the girls on the Ranger Award. Most of them are CPR and Wilderness First Aid certified. We have been working on land navigation, backpacking, cooking and leave no trace. This summer we went on several trips including canoeing, backpacking and rock climbing. Some of our upcoming trips include a land navigation day trip, a scavenger hunt in Chicago, a ski trip and a trip to Michigan to lear how to luge.
We hope all of the girls earn the ranger award and with the group we have and the help of the experienced boys in the group we are confident that they will achieve this
For the summer of 2009 we are looking at several options for a high adventure trip. We are on the waiting list for Philmont, but we are not sure if this will work out for us this year. We have been talking about a rafting trip to Ace in West Virginia as an alternate trip. Our Varsity Team went there a couple years ago and the trip was a lot of fun.
About the Troop 101 Varsity Team
Once a Scout reaches the age of fourteen he is eligible to join the Varsity Team. Varsity Scouts continue to work on rank advancement. They also have opportunities to earn Varsity letters for high adventure activities and sports.
The Varsity Team is intended to be more boy led than the younger Scouts. Varsity Scouts take the lead in planning what activities they do and plan the actual events as well.
The Varsity Team has it's own positions, these qualify for rank advancement as well. The Varsity Scouts have the opportunity to earn other awards such as the Denali award. The Varsity Scouts are led by a Team Captain. There are also program managers for the following areas, advancement, high adventure/sports, personal development, service and special programs and events.
Varsity Scouts wear the same uniform as the regular Scout Troop. The Varsity Scouts wear orange shoulder loops and a Varsity identification strip above the right pocket.
The Troop 101 Varsity Team has grown in size over the last year and we have a very active group of Scouts in the program. As a Varsity Scout you can expect to have a lot of fun. The Team has many events that are open to Varsity Scouts only as well as attending normal troop functions and outings. Some of the activities the Varsity Team has done in the past are...
- Whitewater rafting the New River and mountain biking in West Virginia
- Ski trips to Wisconsin
- Hockey games
- Bowling, movies, etc.
- Philmont
Some of the things we have discussed as possible future events include canoeing in Missouri, Kayaking the Apostle Islands, backpacking at Isle Royale NP or Great Smoky Mountains NP, summer trip to Michigan, Sea Base and much more.
